CANNOT INSTALL!!!!!!

Asked by Ryan Quevillon

OMG .. my colleague had me convinced that UBUNTU was SOOOOO user friendly. Yeah right ...
Brief synopsis ... my brother gave me his HP... XP desktop to try and cleanup (viruses, spyware, malware etc). After about 4 hours attempting to clean it up, I decided to give up and just overwrite XP with a fresh install of UBUNTU. Piece of cake, right? WRONG!!! The website just says "yup create a boot disk and reboot the CPU ... no problem" Yeah .. OK.
I keep getting ..."Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report." etc.
Not as simple as it seems is it? Please, make me a believer in your OS. Don't make me go back to Bill Gates. HELP!!!!!
I don't know how to proceed?

This is a motherboard/Bios issue. Some motherboards on older computers were built specifically for Gates and Co. and will not run anything else. Apic is Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. This basically assigns input and output designations. The Linux kernel can't find what its looking for.

You can google "IO-APIC+timer" and get all kinds of results. Most will tell you to boot with F6 and manually add noapic to the kernel. What version of Ubuntu are you installing?

I would first try reburning the ISO at the slowest speed possible using session-at-once, be sure to verify the disc. Fast burns have been known to go haywire and cause all kinds of goofy errors, including this one.

Hi there,

Well the F6 option seemed to work for a while. Then the install gets to a certain point, then I get a message like "BusyBug .... Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" Or something similar. I guess I go back to old reliable Billy Gates .... So frustrating.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you test the CD for defects?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?
Have you tested your RAM for errors?

Also, lose the attitude, it's not very becoming and it is also of zero value to the question.

Can you help with this problem?
