10.10 Dual boot install stops on first screen

Asked by Charlie Boyle

Win XP desktop. 10.10 DVD boots & runs fine on the PC. Upon attempting to install as a dual boot configuration, the install process stops on the very first screen, "Preparing to install Ubuntu," after clicking [Forward]. Note both optional checkboxes are checked - updates & third party software. Clicking [Quit] generates a pop-up asking if I want to quit. I quit and the machine boots into Ubuntu. I have also tried installing after Ubuntu is up and running - same situation occurs. Thoughts? Thanks.

Further note: The machine is an older HP Slimline. HP uses two primary partitions, C: and S: (a hidden partition for recovery purposes.)

Please verify the md5sum of your cd
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Do you have wired network connection ?
Could you also boot on CD, choose "Try without install" and then System->Administration->Test Hardware and test both graphic and network.

Installed Ubuntu successfully this AM (Sat, 13-Nov-10, @ 06:01). The following USB devices were connected to the computer:
> 500G disk
> 500G disk
> Camera dock
> USB hub w/4G flash, mouse, and printer
I disconnected them all and plugged the mouse directly into a USB slot. The installation then progressed successfully. My GUESS, the USB hub/mouse configuration cause the "hang."

The REAL root cause & solution:
> Root cause: Patriot Xporter XT flash drive I had left installed during boot was causing the hang. The XT has unallocated partition space at the very beginning of the dive.
> Solution: Replace Patriot with a Corsair Survivor. The Survivor has a single partition and no unallocated space. Unbuntu installed fine!
