Ubuntu v. 10.10 unstable

Asked by Carlos Cordal

I've recently installed the new version 10.10 of Ubuntu. I made a clean installation from a cd. When I tried the first time it worked ok, but after a few minutes in the second try, the display became blur and even I could move the mouse, I couldn't access any of the icons or menues.

Tried to restart several times and sometimes it works all right at the beginning and then after about 30 minutes the system turns blur without responding again.... other times it works fine all the time or doesn't work till I restart the machine.

I appreciate if anyone can help me with this.... I want to make clear that I have no experience with Linux. THANKS!

As additional information my PC desktop is a pentium 4 (intel i865), 3 ghz, ram 1.2 Gb, nvidia geoforce 2MX 100 (64mb)

Thanks in advance
Carlos

Did you MD5 test the ISO you installed with?
Did you burn the CD slowly?
Did you check the CD for defects?
Have you tested your RAM

The steps in this answer https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/130630 are to give you some hints and suggestions to troubleshoot.

To not waste your time the most important point is to check the md5sum of your iso image BEFORE to burn it to a cd or to load into a usbstick.

Thank you actionparsnip and marcobra, MD5 test was ok, the cd has no defects and was burn slowly. I still don't checked the RAM, I'll do it on Wednesday and let you know.

I don't know if it's relevant but the RAM is working fine for windows.

(I have partitioned the disk for Linux with 20GB for '/', 40 GB for '/home' and 2.3 GB for 'swap' and aprox. 100 GB for Win XP)

Thank you both again for your help. I'll comment you what is the memory test result.

System->Administration->Proprietary driver
Try to change driver, and report results.

Hi, I have tested the RAM with memtest86 and no errors were found.

I will try with delance's advice and of course if any of you have another suggestion it will be appreciated.

Delance, I'm new with Linux. Could you help me with the steps to be followed for changing the driver? Thanks.

Can you help with this problem?
