Is there a way to check compatibility of older hardware and drivers with Ubuntu prior to full clean install?

I have an old intel based PC and would like to install Ubuntu 10.10 but need to insure compatibility of hardware components and availability of drivers before I commit to the installation. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would hate to go on a driver search after the load.

Boot on Ubuntu CD
Choose "Try without install"
System->Administration->Test hardware (graphic, network, Firefox, .......).
