can't install ubuntu

Asked by werner totino

Problem with computer and have to re-install Ubuntu 10.10 but installation freezes on the preparing to install Ubuntu page. Everything checks out, plenty of free space on the hard drive, but it just won't go past the installation page. Right now I'm using the try Ubuntu out right off the CD I burned, How can I reformat the hard drive or un-install the older version 10.10 Ubuntu so I can go with a fresh set up?... Anyone got any ideas....

First thing to check: is the CD valid ?

There is a self check utility. When you boot on the CD and see the screen with the two icons at the bottom, press ESC, and you should get a menu. In this menu, there is a option to check the CD. This way you can be 100% sure that you burned the valid liveCD.

If the CD is fine and you still cannot install, I think I would try the Alternate CD. It's another CD you can burn, no graphic installer, no Live system, but just a text installer. This may work better.

I don't understand. If you failed to install 10.10, how can you have to uninstall 10.10 ?

About reformating disk, boot on CD, choose "Try without install" and then System->Administration->Gparted. But I'm not sure you need it. So could you explain clearly what's the problem.

If I understand, you get screen with "Install"/"Try without install", and launch of "Install" fails. What happens exactly ?

And as said François, check your CD. It happens that download failed or CD was badly burned. To check downloaded ISO, look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
