If your Ubuntu CD is a bit old I would suggest you to download the latest version from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

This version will launch an installer if you insert the CD while you are in Windows. You will then be able to install Ubuntu and Windows side by side.

Good luck,
Simon

Download the latest Ubuntu distribution, and burn on a CD.
Boot on the CD, choose "Try without install".
In a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), type the following command:
   sudo parted -l
where "-l" is lowercase "L". This will display list of partition.

Post the result, I need to know if you have 4 primary partitions or an extended one.

Can you help with this problem?
