Error: Cannot allocate real mode pages 10.04

Asked by delory Theape

I have downloaded and verified the installation disk for 10.10. I can boot and run the demo from the disk.
I installed to harddrive, formatting the harddrive from within the installer (whole drive for this OS).
On booting I get the messages;

Loading Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
error: cannot allocate real mode pages
Loading initial ramdisk
error: you need to load the kernel first

Thoughts?

If you burned a CD, did you burn it slowly? Did you check the CD (or USB) for defects.

Have you tested your RAM for errors?

I have tested the DVD for defects (none found). The speed of burning was
under 'auto' control - so not sure how fast it went.. I am able to boot from
the DVD, and run Kubuntu in demo version from the DVD, so it would appear
that the DVD is 'reasonably' OK.
I am currently doing a memory RAM test

...Have done the memory test that comes with the kubuntu 10.10 install. It found no errors.

...when I attempt to do the memory test (memtest86+) that is listed on start up as one of the options in GRUB (version 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3), I get the following error

error: too small lower memory (0x99100 > 0x0).

Sounds bad, set your BIOS to failsafe defaults, it may help. If the memtest is failing it's not a good sign

Could you check if it is same issue as:

Thanks Delance,

It looks very similar to that issue.

I suspect the solution will be to roll back grub2 to grub legacy (which I have not yet done)..
Here is a guide for anyone interested...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1298932

At present I have clean installed Ubuntu 9.0.1, and successfully upgraded to 9.10 (which retained grub-legacy). I think a fresh install of 9.10 will install grub2 (?)

Yes, Grub2 is default boot loader of 9.10. A fresh install will install Grub2.

Can you help with this problem?
