computer not used in a while, now 9.04 won't load

My comp. hasn't been used for a while but when I try starting it, unable to load ubuntu 9.04. How do I get missing apt with our a back up?

9.04 is no longer supported. It is EOL now

Could you try downloading and and booting from a current live cd?

You could use an ubuntu live CD (either 9.04, if you installed from CD, or download a new one) to recover any data from your existing install /home/USERNAME/, to a USB disk or over the network.

What happens exactly when you boot ?
Do you have data to recover ?
