Ubuntu 10.10 hangs during installation.

Asked by Jeremiah Iacob

I just recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 32bit desktop version. I burned the iso unto a cd and then restarted the computer. The computer booted fine into the live cd. When the splash screen appeared (the one with Ubuntu and 5 dots under it), it just hangs there and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The dots under Ubuntu light up but that's it. The installation just hangs there. Can someone please help me out on this issue? Thanks

PC specs:
CPU - Pentium 4 processor 1.8 ghz
memory - 1 Gb
video card - Geforce 5200 256 mb

I had version 10.10 installation hang near the end after watching the progress bar for forty five minutes which stopped at about 90% with the message 'Ready When You Are' but the wizard stubbornly refused to allow use of the Forward button.
This is on a Core i5 Quad processor with 4GB Ram and 1 TB HD and it happened twice. Then I installed using 10.4 and it told me 10.10 was already installed but I had no way of knowing if it was complete so I let 10.4 delete it. I got 10.4 installed and maybe I can download an upgrade.
All things considered here it might be said that 10.10 wasn't completely tested before release.

@Peter: It's not the same issue, so please open a new question. I presume you entered a user name with upper case or special character. So retry with a name made of lower case alphabetical characters and numbers.

@Jeremiah: When splash screen appear, could you press key <ESC> and report mast messages.

I figured out the problem. The problem was that my computer had an onboard graphics card and one that I installed. I switched to the onboard and the installation worked just fine. Thank you all for your time.

@Jeremiah: Thanks for posting this. I had the same problem, and it was really p*ssing me off. This is my first attempt at playing with Linux, and I'm attempting to load 10.10 onto a spare hard drive on an old Dell Dimension 2400. Your comment about the graphics card made me remember that I had two 3rd party cards in there: one for FireWire and another for decent sound processing. Since this is a backup machine, I pulled them out, rebooted, and all of a sudden I've made it to the "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu" welcome screens.

At this rate, I'm expecting another five fails for other reasons, but I might just have a completed installation by tomorrow some time.

I'm truly impressed with the information that is available through diligent searching, but this only reinforces to me why Microsoft and Apple are the behemoths that they are. For casual users like me who are merely curious, this is hardly plug and play.
