My sons CD ROM DVD ROM was bad and I replaced it but now it will not read cd to install Ubuntu 10.4

Asked by oocevin

It would boot then check hardware and turn off.
I replaced it with a new one and now it will boot
and stay running. But it will not read to install.
I believe it is a sata. It has a small cable instead
of the wide ribbon.
I reordered to install but it will not read it so I can
install Ubuntu. I did something so now I can not
log in. It has the user on it but when I put the
password in there it will not go into the desktop..
How do I get bios to read the DVD ROM.
When booting it shows the DVD Rom.

Have you powered the drive too? Are the SATA controllers enabled?

The PC is a old one. It has no Hard Drive. I handed him
(PC Man) my DVD CD ROM and he handed me this
one. It uses the same sata cable as the other one.
And when I put in the CD the light blinks on and off
as like it is reading the livecd.
So all should be enabled..

I suggest you get in the BIOS (Reboot and press the key to enter setup) and make sure the drive is detected there. Also ensure CDROM is selected as the first boot item

As I was booting I pressed alt f2 and clicked on the cd rom
and was able to install.
But it is still not recognizing the DVD-CD ROM as I boot..
