Ubuntu 10.10 (desktop, AMD64) installation fails at "Ready when you are" screen ("Forward" button won't become active).

Asked by Julia A. DuFault

I built a new computer from components (ASUS motherboard, AMD CPU), and am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 as the OS. For the past several days I have been fighting to get a good download of the .iso file, finally solved that (I thought) by going to a different mirror (Softpedia) and using a different computer at home to download and burn the image (Nero, CD-RW.) I verified the disk, it came back as 100% no errors, so I thought I was good to go.

But, when I run the disk in the new (no OS) computer, the installation runs fine until I get to the point where it says "Ready when you are", and I can go no further. The "Forward" button on the screen remains "gray", after entering all the required info; all I can do is go "Back" or click on the "Ready..." line which gives me a bunch of DOS-type info. I have tried powering off and rebooting the computer several times, each time I get the same result. (This is the new 10.10 release, not the beta version; I just started downloading this past week.)

I don't know what an "MD5 test" is, I saw that mentioned on someone else's question. What is that, and how would it help?
I saw the ".torrent" type file somewhere when I was searching for an alternate download source, but it required some other kind of software download for me to use it, so I didn't try that one. Is that type of file more reliable than the .iso file, for some reason?

I am using a new (blank) hard drive so I selected the "Erase and use full hard drive" each time, if that makes a difference.

Thanks to Marco for providing the link to detailed solutions including MD5SUM for Windows. It sounds like the .iso file I downloaded may have become corrupted in the process, so what I got was a perfect (CD) copy of an imperfect file.
I will try downloading the .torrent and MD5 utilities, and see if they help.

Update: Well, I downloaded the .torrent utility, and then downloaded a new copy of the .iso file (which I had no problem locating this time, later on.) I downloaded the recommended CD-burning program from Infra Recorder, and burned a new copy at 4x speed (though I didn't see any option in this program to verify the disk when it was finished.) BUT, I still got the same error: the installation halts at the "Ready when you are" line, that is with about 1/5 of the progress bar remaining to be completed. I cannot get the "Forward" button to click, to allow me to proceed to the next and final setup screen.
I also tried making a USB stick version, following the directions on the Ubuntu 10.10 download site. But I had no better luck with that. Though, although I tried ensure the Setup menu was set to allow booting from "removable media", I got the impression that the computer was not trying to boot from the USB stick.
I did not attempt to download and use the "MD5 test", because if I am understanding things correctly, even if that told me there were errors in my download, it would not help me to get a better copy next time. I have already done pretty much everything I can to get and install a good copy of Ubuntu 10.10; the satellite internet service I have is the best I can get here in my price range, there is no DSL available in our rural area. (And I have not had any problems in the past downloading very large game or other files via the satellite.)
I am also wondering if the "AMD 64" version is compatible with my new CPU, which is an AMD Athlon II multi-core.

At this point, I am ready to throw in the towel. It has been 5 days since I built the new computer, and I have spent about 50% of each of the past 5 days trying to download and install an Ubuntu OS. I had my husband (who I built the computer for) sold on the idea of trying out this new, supposedly better and more reliable operating system; but after watching me struggle for the past 5 days, he and his friends are saying, "Yeah, right! Uh, let us know when they get the bugs out." Hubby is anxious to use his new computer (as the old one died), and one of his friends has a spare copy of Windows XP with the access key, so he is ready to give up and install Windows XP instead. Even if we finally get the CD from Ubuntu in the mail however many weeks from now, I doubt he will want to try replacing XP with Ubuntu unless he absolutely has to, if he already has everything working by then.

Thanks, anyway, for all the help and advice everyone has given! But I suspect, unless and until Ubuntu/LINUX disks are readily available at the local computer or office supply store - hopefully for less than the exorbitant prices Microsoft charges - with clear instructions as to which versions are compatible with which type computers, this program is going to remain primarily in the realm of computer afficionados with a lot more expertise and determination than I have.

I (and others) ran into the same problem. Each of the fields (except the first password field) wants a check mark next to it before you can click "forward". A common problem is using caps in the username, which apparently are not allowed.

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10029677

Can you help with this problem?
