Install issue after rebbot i get black screen

Asked by Chris Richardson

This is my first install, so not familiar with UBUNTU. I installed as instructed - alongside Win XP. On reboot I get a black Unix screen with a grub> prompt. Tried rebooting a few times but no change.
When I selected Reboot after install, screen went black, listed a string of commands and then hung - did not reboot. Perhaps install did not complete?
Cannot use PC.
Help!!

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

If you have trouble with intel8xxx graphic cards:

Thanks for responses, none of which were helpful. I have now resolved the issue by reinstalling. The problem is the install script - the final prompt (AFTER Reboot in the window) was below a long list of errors and not visible below the screen -, causing me to manually reboot and hence missing the final install stage. A clearly visible final prompt is required. Sloppy programming!!

I agree that Marco Braida's form-letter responses were not applicable to this situation. It would be a good idea for respondents to take a little more care.

I did try to fix this in Maverick, but apparently it didn't work for some machines. The problem is a race condition as the system is being shut down, which causes Plymouth not to be able to display a splash screen at that point. Unfortunately it's extremely difficult to debug as any log files you write in an attempt to debug the problem are lost on live CD shutdown ...

I expect that we'll have another go at fixing this in Natty.

Can you help with this problem?
