Ubuntu 10.10 install fails at partition stage

Asked by Simon McKenzie-Nickson

Installing Ubuntu alongside XP. Booting from CD the install proceeds to the stage to choose the size of the partition for Ubuntu and warns that it may take some time. After beginning, an error saying that there was an error during partitioning and install has been aborted. Has happened twice now.

did you defragment your hard drive before installing?

when you install "along side", ubuntu will take whatever free space you have on your windows partition and install it there. but you have to have enough free space for it to install.

Have not defragged no ... Will try that.

Will try again and ask it to partition into a smaller section instead

I de-fragged, then tried install again, when it came to partitioning stage I left the slider where it was (40GB) and install went ahead fine
