Asked by rolan

Summary
--
Two occurrences of bug on notebook:
     Jean Toshiba L655D PSK1NC-01100S
     Ziggert Toshiba L650D 10H PSK1SE
The installation of 10.10 stops at the first seconds. Also issue with 10.04 bit but 9.10 works.
The new release of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty alpha seems to have solved this problem !!!
--
I've tried and "acpi = off" and "noapic" and "nolapic" - both separately and together. If you choose at least one of these options - a black screen.
--
Updated Bios to 1.60, boot still hangs ;-(
BIOS at the Toshiba Homepage is from 08/06/10 i.e. up to date (2010-10-14).
Last BIOS L650D-ST2N01 on Toshiba support (at 2010-12-14)
   06/12/10 Satellite L655D 1.60-WIN
   06/12/10 Satellite L650D 1.60-WIN

Original question
I waited 4 months of release 10.10. What's up? Not installed, the installation stops at the first seconds. Laptop Toshiba l650d veshel few months ago. in 2009, problems with Ubuntu do not know. How so? I was not sleeping nights - waiting for new release. I have to disappoint you. (Translated from Russian carried out using google translate) / Vladimir (<email address hidden>)

I looked with Google, and there are many solutions (and probably many potential problem).

When Ubuntu CD boot, hit <F6> key, you will see a menu. Select "acpi=off", then key <ESC>.
If it works, we will have to make this permanent by editing file /etc/default/grub:
   GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off noapic"

With such an attitude ubuntu developers will lose all laptop owners "toshiba". Irritating to their silence.

@rolan: Ubuntu developers are benevolent, and you are not alone to have issues today with Maverick. If you want to help on forum, you are welcomed.

Try ubuntu 9.10 that one works on mine ! But not 10.04 and 10.10.
Toshiba is not helping much !

And yet, what do the owners of laptops toshiba l650d at the moment? I understand, the problem is solved or not, or it will be resolved in version 11.04. Personally for me it's the collapse of Ubuntu.

Yes, the problem ist still alive.

But I'm not sure wether the Ubuntu Kernels or Toshiba Bios is responsible for the problem.

1) Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 work

2) After a Bios update from Toshiba, the installation of Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 was no problem on other Toshiba models

So, I'm not quite sure.

At the moment I'm working with Win7. Hope there will be shortly a fix, doesn't matter from wich side.

I also wrote a message in support Toshiba, but they have not responded. bios is the latest. 9.10 actually works, but wifi - could not be established. If you know - how to install the driver wifi - will fit and 9.10.

Yes , well when i said ubuntu 9.10 works on L655D i forgot to say you have to install a driver for the wifi and the ethenet also !
you should have wifi like mine : Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)
You can install the windows driver with ndiswrapper (or compile the source of linux driver, if i remember well you have to use the version 8192)
Search on internet the procedure to compile this linux driver. I don't remember how i did it !

I am also having this issue. Ubuntu 11 was running fine, all of a sudden, I can't load it and live CD crashes.

I forgot to mention, my computer with the same exact proble,, is a self build. Also, windows vista 64 dual boot DOES 'WORK'!

If LiveCD crashes suddenly, you have a hardware issue, as installed Ubuntu is not implied in LiveCD. Could you confirm that LiveCD crashes suddenly (and not only boot from hard disk) ?

Revision history for this message
Jean Lussier (jeanlussier) said :

I would say the same thing, live-cd problem = hardware issue.
This could be a hard-disk issue or a memory problem. Try a memory check on live CD if you can

Personally , i installed Linux Mint 11 (based on Ubuntu 11.04) on my Toshiba Laptop and it is just great !
I hate Unity and Gnome 3 . That version is giving me the best of Ubuntu and more...
Good luck to you !

yes, it crashes after I choose a distro, or try install. I've also tried to install FreeBSD today. Unix gave me a much detailed view. It looks like pci slots are where my troubles begin, then all sorts of interrupts happen.

I still don't understand why vista is still able to load. Normally its the other way around.

Can you help with this problem?
