Yes; you'll need to re-size the partition first so that Ubuntu can be installed along side.

http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/05/05/how-to-resize-partitions-in-windows-7/

This site gives instructions on how to shrink the size of the Windows 7 partition. Shrink it by whatever amount you want left for Ubuntu; keep in mind you can always resize the partitions later if you need more room. After you've resized, restart and install Ubuntu, and you should have the option to install side-by-side.

Added note: Be sure to backup! You never know when something will go wrong.

Hi,

I think you can't have the option install side by side because your system has probably run out of primary partitions:

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (UNE) on an Asus 1001HA EeePC originally equipped with Windows 7 Starter.

I found that all 4 primary partitions (you can only have a max of 4 primary partitions) were already used on the 160 GB internal drive : 1 partition for recovery of the Windows system, 1 partition for C:, one partition for D: and an other one for I don't remember now.

So as I needed two extra partitions to install Ubuntu in dual-boot, I had to free one primary partition in order to establish an extended one, so I choose to backup the recovery partition which was sda4 I think, then delete it, before proceeding with installation with Ubuntu.

To check for that, give us the output of

sudo fdisk -l

after fdisk, you have a space then a dash and the letter L in minuscule. If you are using a live CD or a live USB, the system will not ask you for a password as the default user in live systems "ubuntu" has sudo rights and no password.

from a terminal (Applications > Accessories > terminal)

Thank you, very much, Wane Dacha and Vu Do Quynh.
Yes! My HD come from factory with 4 primary partitions.
One partition, with an empty disc (D:).
I did this:
1) I deleted the volume with empty disc.
2) Then, Ubuntu install side by side with Windows 7.
