Please help- I've tried to install xubuntu 4 times

Asked by cats

I am trying to install the 10.04 Lucid Lynx from the live cd.
This is on an older machine- 2003 hp pavilion ze4941us notebook with
   a 60 GB hard drive
   224 RAM
   130 processor
it had Windows XP factory installed on a NTFS partition.

I did a lot of research, and thought I could install a linux os if it had GUI- I have only worked with windows, and the command line is very intimidating to me. The Live CD will only do command line- and I followed the step by step instructions, but I think I messed up at either the partitions or the grub boot.
I checked the CD, it is fine. I gave up and tried to install Mint 9 LXDE- the 1st screen comes up- then I get, " error-failed due to unknown user id." So I gave up and tried Puppy Lynx- it works fine, but I can not get it to install on the hard drive. I also tried DSL- worked, by I don't like it,
I don't have the windows XP CD and now can't get anything to work.

I put the Xubuntu CD in again, & I tried to "rescue broken ". It installed it all over again- this takes forever- and this time I told it to put on the whole disc- no partitions, and I put in /dev/sda to try & made it boot from the hard drive. Still didn't work. It said it made ext4 file system partition #1 of scsi1 (0.0.0).
I have NO IDEA what this means. I'm not sure if this is the only OS on the drive or not, but it has written something on it as long as it took to install. Please help me & tell me what I'm doing wrong. Can this be fixed? I'm a newbie and really need some help. I hope this is the right place for answers- Debbie

Did you MD5sum test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?

Yes to all - to burn the cd I had to use Windows Disc Image Burner , and it does not let you pick the speed.

I work usually on Ubuntu, so I propose you to work with this version.
All the solutions we will find will probably works with derivatives such as Mint, Xubuntu and Lubuntu.
The first thing to do is to boot from Ubuntu CD (please download 10.04.1 and not 10.4 which is older) and choose option "Try but don't install".
Then Applications->Accessories->Terminal and post result of command
   sudo parted -l
where "-l" is lower case "-L".
Then System->Administration->Test System and run test about:
  1) Graphic Card
  2) Network
  3) Sound
  4) WIFI
and some others if you want.
Then open Firefox and open a web site to check if you have enough RAM to run this version (I run virtual machine with 256 GB but you have less and Ubuntu is more and more voracious. So testing after derivatives such as Xubuntu and Lubuntu could be a good idea.
The open a web site with Flash to stress system.
If all of this works, we will be able to start installation.

I had some sort or error or problem with the grub and partitions. I am currently using dban to wipe the hard drive clean, and will then try a clean new install. Hopefully that will work. Thank you for addressing my problem.
