Sure, use the Win7 to resize the NTFS to leave unpartitioned space, you can then install Ubuntu to the unpartitioned space quite happily. Use the version with the apps you like the look of. They are equal but have different default apps. If you are new to the OS then Ubuntu seems to be the one most guides are geared towards but this does NOT make it any better than the others

Yes, it is possible to have multiboot on your computer.

I would recommend first to defragment the backup disk in Windows (the one with 50 GB free space), and again to backup all important files. When you have done the defragmentation, you can download a partition manager for Windows, maybe Easus partition manager, and shrink the backup disk (the one with 50 GB free space) so you could have about 15 to 20 GB unpartitioned space.

When you have done that you can install Ubuntu on unpartitioned space (you will have to do a manual selection of partition for Ubuntu). Be sure to use unpartitioned space.

When you install Ubuntu, you will have Ubuntu´s Grub menu, where you will be able to select between three operating systems.

I recommend Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS version (Long Term Support).
