issue with Boot Loader???

Asked by Benny

I have issues with my Ubuntu installation. I am quite new to Ubuntu....

1. I want to install Ubuntu on my old desktop. AMD Athlon XP 2000+. Which version of Ubuntu do I use? AMD64 or i386? Alternate or not? and which version? 10, 9? (I ask because AMD Xp is before AMD64 and I am not certain which version <i386 or AMD64> to use.....)

2. I have a non-operational Windows XP SP3 on my C drive, which is the same drive I want the Ubuntu on. Do I must format C drive before I attemp Ubuntu installaion? because I read that sometimes windows will block Ubuntu loader? If I must formate C, how do i do it by using the Ubuntu installation disc?

3. I downloaded and burnt alternate i386 desktop version onto a cd, and I set the BIOS to load cdrom first. I have no problem getting into the installaion menu, However, nothing works in there. When I click on "install Ubuntu", I get "Boot Loader" with "install" message. When i click check disc for damage, i get "Boot Loader" with "check". Same thing with all options except the one with Load from HDD.

I tried to burn the disc both slow and fast, both not working

What's going ONNNNN!!!!!??? I am confused...

Any information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Hi!

You can use i386 version, i think it will work faster than AMD64.

I recommend Ubuntu 10.04 because it is LTS version (Long Term Support).

You can format the Windows partition during Ubuntu installation, or you can use the whole disk to install Ubuntu on.

Alternate CD is not for you because it has no graphical interface. You should choose the regular Live CD.

HI

I also tried the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version i386

However, It won't work either... i get this "caspe2/vmlinuz" msg before it asks me to choose the language. Then the same thing repeats itself... when i click "install Ubuntu" on the i386 desktop 10.04.1 verion, i get this "Boot Loader" msg with "live-install". I had no progress bar; I only have "ok" bottom. After i clicked on that "ok" nothing happened.... I let it sit for 30 mins, still nothing...

I don't know what to do....

Can you try to start memory test on Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD?

There are 5 options:

1) Try Ubuntu without installing
2) Install Ubuntu
3) Check disc for defects
4) Test Memory
5) Boot from first hard disk

You can also check disc for defects.

Download 10.04.1 which is better than 10.04
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

Then please verify the md5sum of your cd
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
and compare the result with:
    http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/MD5SUMS
which should be:
   9a95ed6f6ec38fb58c446dba1add6a08 *ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

Could you confirm you don't get, with desktop-i386, the menu with the 5 options:

1) Try Ubuntu without installing
2) Install Ubuntu
3) Check disc for defects
4) Test Memory
5) Boot from first hard disk

If you can't see this graphical menu, you have a really big problem.

I can only see
1) try ubuntu without installing and
2) install Ubuntu

that's it!! nothting else....

on top of that, when i click on 1), i get "caspe2/vmlinuz" msg with a OK buttom.

when i click 2), i get "live-install" msg with a OK buttom

and nothing happened...

OK, so problem is not so big!
It's better to fix "try ubuntu without installing" before "install Ubuntu".
It seems the CD-ROM boot loader is unable to load Linux kernel.

1) Message is not with "caspe2" but "casper". I need the full message description to guess what is problem.
2) Are you able to boot on a OS (Linux or Windows on this computer) ? And from which computer did you use Launchpad (it will help me to propose you solution process) ?
3) Can you confirm you use 10.04.1 and not old 10.04 (some bugs were fixed since 10.04, and I hope few were added) ?
4) As it seems you have a second computer or can boot on first one, could check MD5 sum of used Ubuntu CD-ROM.

1) the msg is a window:

Boot Loader... <on the top of window>

caspe2/vmlinuz <below the Boot Loader> I just checked, mine says casep2.. which i found it very strange as well...

"OK" buttom <below caspe2/vmlinuz>

2) I only have windows XP sp3 on the same HD where i want my Ubuntu. It is, however, not operational.
It kept on restarting for somereason... Maybe it is because i did a windows update just before i attemped to install ubuntu.... long story....

3) Yes, i can comfirm i'm using 10.04.1

4) Following are the content of my md5sum file:

sry, actually it says

/caspe2/vmlinuz (additional / in the front to be exact)

The "/caspe2/vmlinuz" is only reported in another Web page by google, on a recent update of Ubuntu (13 July).
So I apologize, but could you test 10.04 (and not 10.04.1, as it could be a new bug...).
------
Please make MD5 test on ISO image (file which ended with ".iso" suffix) and not folder. You should get a single line like:
    9a95ed6f6ec38fb58c446dba1add6a08 *ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

I've Been trying everything i can think of, and i believe the problem lies with my hardware imcompatiblility among eachother. I tried 10.04, it worked at first, then computer froze... then the same story all over again...
I thought i try 10.04.1, again, for some reason it worked... then it froze....... then same problem all over again...
I thought i try version 9... guess what, same story...
i thought i try 10.10 beta... even worse...

I went back to windows xp.. it froze, too.
I also tried windows 98.. no hope...

I give up!! i'm gonna put that computer away and maybe just buy a new one..... I had enough.....

but anyway, thank you for all you guys' help, i believe the problem is not Ubuntu but the computer itself...
thank you and have a great day!!
