can't get lucid installer to upgrade offline, without going over the net

Asked by Dan Connolly

I'm trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 lucid from a torrent; I found directions
at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades#Upgrading%20from%20a%20Torrent

Getting the torrent was no trouble; it took about 20 minutes to get
both the desktop and the alternate image (I didn't realize I needed
the alternate image until I had started getting the desktop image).

$ md5sum *i386*
5b2dadacfd692b4f2d5c7cf034539262 ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso
d044a2a0c8103fc3e5b7e18b0f7de1c8 ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso

Then I mounted the image a la:

$ sudo mount -o loop /home/connolly/Desktop/OpenSource/OpenSource-CD/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0

and then I started the installer:

$ gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

At the "Include latest updates from the Internet?" dialog, I answered "No".
It says quite clearly: "If you answer 'no' here, the network is not used at all."

but then I get a "Do you want to start the upgrade?" dialog that
says "You have to download a total of 1,209M."

I thought perhaps "download" was a misnomer and that it would
get the packages locally, but
 (a) the network went *very* busy (estimating hours to days to complete), so I cancelled it;
 (b) I took the network down with "sudo ifdown eth0" and tried again,
  and it failed altogether

Then I thought perhaps the problem was related to using a mounted .iso image
rather than a physical CD, so I burned the image to CD and tried again.
Same symptoms (with the alternate and then the desktop CD).

I have logs of all of these attempts; I think the one with eth0 down is likely
to have the most information; let's see if I can figure out how to attach it...

Ugh... I don't see any way to attach files.
So I put it in http://pastebin.com/C5S97rRY

Hmm... package "linux" got attached to this question somewhow; I doubt
that's the relevant package, but I'm not sure which is... perhaps update-manager-core?

I experienced the same problem when upgrading ubuntu. ubuntu does not want to upgrade if there is a list of packages on the UPDATE MANAGER. i think my best solution is that must complete updating packages on the UPDATE MANAGER list and than upgrade ubuntu into 10.04.

if you do not have a fast internet connection, it is easier to remove the existing packages list on the UPDATE MANAGER and than do upgrade.. this way work for me.. :)

Indeed, there's some documentation that says to apply pending 9.10 updates before upgrading to 10.4, and indeed I did that. It didn't help.

If having an empty Update Manager list is not working (if the CD upgrade still wants to change the upgrade to a network upgrade), you may also need to uncheck all the software repositories in Synaptic.

Run Synaptic and go to the software repositories list and make sure ALL the third party PPAs are unchecked. Then make sure you Reload in Synaptic and then exit. Make sure Update Manager's list is now, still, empty. Then try and run the upgrade.

This problem continues as I have exact same problem trying to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10
With limited net access doing this upgrade over the net is not an option.
I have both the normal and alternative CD and iso files available.
When I say NO to above mentioned question to NO do not go online to pull down the upgrade files,
it ignores this and will error out without net access. And yet my Synaptic is all up to date
and does NOT need any updates prior to the upgrade attempt.

You should subscribe the bug to give it more weight. It seems not to be an administration issue but a bug, so bug section fit better than answer question. Since 9.10, it is possible to reinstall system while keeping user data. You simply need to select "manual partitioning", mount the right folder on partitions and DON'T FORMAT. I don't know how will be managed packets not installed by default. If you try this solution, could you check this point and post results.
