I have made several installs in the same computer with the Intrepid 'Desktop' CD.
I used one partition for / every time, with the Reiser File System.
Every time I allow GRUB to be installed to (hd0) everything works fine.
Every time I select to have GRUB installed to /dev/sda2, ( I want to chainload it from my dedicated GRUB partition), I have this problem, (crash in ubiquity at grub-install).

For me it's a minor nuisance but nothing difficult to deal with.
I just perform a direct boot from GRUB's Command Line Interface, http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm#First_method:_direct_kernel_boot.
Then when Intrepid is up and running run 'sudo update-grub' to make a menu.lst automatically, and install GRUB to the boot sector of the partition.

I have read of one person not having an initrd.img, another way that can be fixed using the 'Desktop' Live CD to chroot into the installation and running 'mkinitramfs', as in this link, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=979311&highlight=Cannot+boot+Ibex-ubiquity+crash+during+install&page=2
