Problem

Asked by Brandon

Ubuntu does not have any trying instructor programs or games to teach typing for my children. I noticed Tuxtype was included in many Ubuntu versions, however, it had a few bugs in it where you could not go to all the sections without getting a blank green screen. Do you have anything else on ubuntu that works or is downloadable with you Add/Remove feature?

Hi Brandon

http://www.typingmaster.com/individuals/maclinux/default.asp (but I guess ist's not free, you have to buy for it)

http://sourceforge.net/projects/typefaster/ (it's free)

I guess you can find others in the Internet.

Hope it helps.
Peter

Better yet always initially look for native linux options in Synaptic Package Manager (or Add/Remove Programs) for better integration and easier installs. Then check the web and then fall back on trying to get something for Windows working in Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator ;) )

Find Synaptic by going up to the System menu on the top taskbar - Administration - Synaptic is near the end. You'll need to type in your user password (not the SuperUser/Root one). Then in Synaptic find the Search button to look for stuff. It defaults to searching in the descriptions as well as titles and i found various versions of Tuxtype - avoid KDE versions if your in traditional earthy tones of Gnome or avoid Gnome versions if you're all blue otherwise you have a lot extra packages downloading to get it working).

Actually there's a huge range of educational programs aimed at all levels from learning programming to dealing with blobs for those 4 legged versions of humans. There's sooo much stuff that there's even a special version of Ubuntu called Edubuntu

Good luck and regards from

PS The Wine site has a searchable database on getting a huge range of Windows stuff working
