When are you planning to replace outdated and buggy ttf-indic-fonts with fonts-indic ?

Asked by Anivar Aravind

Baseline : ttf-indic-fonts is not updated after 2010 . Debian moved to fonts-<foundryname> based package naming in 2010 and migrated to fnts-indic and subpackages . Ubuntu still keeps 2010 version of ttf-indic-fonts as sub packages as main fonts in each language pack and breaking native language rendering for 1.3 billion people .

Open type specification changes and rise of harfbuzz as a new rendering engine resulted in a lot of fixes on indian language font , but after many requests Ubuntu is respecting this . Now ubuntu have duplicate set of fonts for many languages . fonts-smc and ttf-malayalam-fonts contains same set of fonts but different versions. But fonts-smc will not be installed via language packs . ttf-indic-fonts-core package installs duplicate version of 2 fonts

See details at this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/958345

Expected Result :
1. Changing ttf-indic-fonts and its installer and language package dependencies to fonts-indic and its sub packages in debian for 15.04 . Please move these packages to main repo from universe

2. For Languages like Malayalam , please take updated fonts from this official SMC PPA https://launchpad.net/~smcproject/+archive/ubuntu/repo . fonts-smc-meera can be the font for installer
