Use healthier torrents to get more speed, transmission can be configured under the preferences menu item in the main transmission.

1. Choose torrents that have lots of seeds
2. Limit its upload speed (in Edit > Preferences > Speed) to 85% of your ISP's upload cap
3. Make sure that your port is open (see Edit > Preferences > Network)

The default is 51413, which you can remember as Pi in reverse. But you can change it to whatever you like in Edit > Preferences > Network

1. if your router supports upnp or nat-pmp, make sure that feature is enabled on your router. Otherwise, pick a port number and tell your router to forward that port to your computer. How to do this varies from router to router.
2. open a hole in Ubuntu's firewall for the port that you've chosen.
3. start up transmission, go to Edit > Preferences > Network and hit the "Test Port" button to see if it worked. :)
