What's Stemmer?

I can't translate the terms Stemmer and Stemming since I have no idea what they mean...
Well, I know what stem is but I can't make the connection...

Any clues?

Well it is the correct definition of word stems but still I can't find the right word for it in Hebrew, because of the unique stem system. stems in Hebrew are 3 to 4 letters max, they are the 3 letters of "Stem" (שורש - shoresh)
Stemming would then be "Lesharesh" (לשרש) but it just doesn't seem right...

I'll consult the Hebrew language forum, i'll mark it as solved but that's just because the English definition doesn't help me at all...
