Ubuntu 8.04 freeze seemingly ramdom

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and have problems with my computer freezing seemingly randomly (had this problem since 7.10 or before). I usually find out the computer is not responding via ssh och vnc. The computer is mostly used as a server but I play movies and music from it to so sometimes I notice crashes with a movie frame freezing or a song stuttering an endless loop. The freezes happens about every second day, sometimes several times a day too. I haven't been able to connect the freezes to any particular use of the computer, it's seems to happen randomly. Also I've checked through the system's logs after a freeze to find clues, but without success. Will appreciate any help to understand and fix this. Can it be a hardware problem?
