tracker-extract running continuously

tracker-daemon -f is showing idle, but tracker-extract is running at 100% on one core. How do I diagnose what it's hanging on, please?
Should I even be running tracker on 15.10? The great majority of web queries about tracker appear to be how to turn it off.
Has something else replaced it for desktop search on Ubuntu? I'm looking for an equivalent to the basic functionality of Mac OS Spotlight and Windows Desktop Search: press a key, type something, matching files appear.
