Is tracker supposed to index the contents of PDF files?

Asked by Shane H

As far as I know, Tracker is supposed to be a libre alternative to Google Desktop search.

Google Desktop search indexes the contents your PDFs, other documents, emails, etc.

I have alot of PDF files which I downloaded from the internet with names like 'analysis111.pdf'.

Obviously, I can't remember all these filenames. But I can remember bits of the content of each document. (E.g. the PDF might contain the word 'convergence').

I tried searching for documents which I definitely know have certain phrases, but they didn't appear.

Will Tracker ever support full-content search?

I recommend Recoll. However, remember that pdf-as-images wont be searchable. The text must be encoded as text.

Recoll looks interesting!

In my opinion, this feature should be integrated into Tracker, as it is the main way to search for files on Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
