can't play VCD

If your're using Dapper Drake :

   * System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
    * To enable the extra Universe and Multiverse repositories
         1. Settings -> Repositories
         2. In the Installation Media tab, click Add. There are three separate repositories; Dapper Drake, Security Updates and Updates. Select each repository and check Officially supported, Restricted copyright, Community maintained (Universe) and Non-free (Multiverse). Ensure you click OK between each repository to save your changes
         3. You should now see those three repositories under Channels. Make sure Officially supported, Restricted copyright, Community maintained (Universe) and Non-free (Multiverse) appears under each repository

    * To add backports and PLF (new versions of many applications. Unsupported. May contain illegal packages. Use at own risk.)
         1. Settings -> Repositories
         2. Click on Add and then Custom
         3. Paste the following four lines into the box and click Add Repository, one line at a time:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf breezy free non-free
deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf breezy free non-free

Then open a terminal window and type the following one line at a time :

sudo apt-get install vcdtools
sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs
sudo apt-get install libxine-main1

But I have installed these three packages already: vcdtools, libxine-extracodecs, libxine-main1, the problem remains.

Totem gives problem with VCD. Try installing gxine or mplayer.

I installed mplayer, it's O.K.

I am using UBUNTU 8.04. I have these problems:- Play DVD&cd is good , but {can not play VCD .I have two :CD&DVD drive. please help me how to play ? thank .

Is a very well know bug of Totem Ubuntu, and the solution is:
1. Uninstall totem-gstreamer backend
2. Install totem-xine backend
3. When insert a VCD, close all the massage of error and open a Terminal and write:

totem vcd:///dev/cdrom

If not work write this:

totem vcd:///dev/scd

Generally, always works!

This worked from the terminal, but I still can't copy the files from the cd to hard disk.And I can't also play forward to another track.The VCD as a whole is stated just as one track in the playlist.

you know ... it works ... but i can't forward>> or back <<< a movie ??? any ideas?
