Could someone replace "demultiplex" with an English word or phrase

Asked by timeless

I got this link via email, and tried to load it using movie player, the video.google.com information is:

CeBIT 2006 - Municator
cebitvideo.com
11 min 20 sec - Mar 13, 2006
cebitvideo.com

I hope one of these links is portable:
http://video.google.com/videoredirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Fcebitvideo.com&chan=Uploaded&prog=CeBIT+2006+-+Municator&date=Mon%2C+Mar+13%2C+2006%2C+12%3A00AM+GMT

When I tried to play the file with movie player, I got this message:
Totem could not play 'file:///tmp/CeBIT2006Municator.avi'.

Could not demultiplex stream.

I don't really care about actually being able to play the file, I object to the message which I as a native English speaker (not a software developer, I can and choose not to where that hat) can not decipher.

compare:
http://m-w.com/dictionary/decipher
1 : DECODE 1a
2 obsolete : DEPICT
3 a : to make out the meaning of despite indistinctness or obscurity b : to interpret the meaning of

http://m-w.com/dictionary/demultiplex
The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search box to the right.

All I ask is that someone please report a bug to whomever owns this package requesting that they replace the error message with something that makes sense to a native English speaker. If that person needs help and can only write a long essay explaining the problem, I will gladly help rewrite the essay into something short and meaningful.

If there is some other way for me to report this problem to the developer, I will gladly follow whatever directions I am given.

Hello,
The error message you get uses a string from GStreamer. I found it using Google looking for the exact string. See:
http://www.indictrans.org/status_files/po_files/gnome_files/pots/gnome-2.6/gstreamer-0.8.pot

The word used is actually a term used in video. Several definitions are available when searching (with Google or else), like:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/multiplexing.html

GStreamer bug reporting is described here:
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/faq/html/chapter-using.html#using-bugs-where

Some friendly advice:
I would strongly suggest you ask nicely instead of judging or making assumptions beforehand about why this terminology is being used. Specifically, avoid citing a dictionary to make your point.

That teminology is not just restricted to video. As a native speaker I understand that word, as does anyone familar with any of the following fields: telephony, networking, media creation, auido and visual. Hell just walk into you local audio visual shop and ask them how one of the 5.1 recivers work, you'll be told it demuliplexes the signal from <insert product they are trying to sell you here>.

I also would like to tell you to ask nicely, and next time, type the word into google/yahoo/<favorite search engine> if you can't find it in your obsolete dictionary.

Demultiplexing is the process of 'making' many signals (audio, data, video, etc) from one stream of multiplexed (combined) signals.

Can you help with this problem?
