looking for easiest app to burn .avi files to dvd that will play on any home dvd player - k3b does not seem to be compatible with my external sony dvd burner?

Brasero and GnomeBaker for Gnome and K3B for KDE (look at their official page for compatible devices maybe you have to download a special firmware for your burner. Just google it). Your hardware player should support divx/xvid coded files anyway.
