cannot play dvds on totem or any other Ubuntu movie player

I cannot play DVDs on Ubuntu movie players (totem or anyothers) I need codecs which I am told do not exist. Cannot play DVDs, can't use the internet successfully I am wandering what I can do with Ubuntu
