Movie Player Won't Work

Asked by USER

I am a newbie user, I just installed Xubuntu 9.04. I put a DVD movie into my DVD drive and I get this message.
An Error Occurred:
Cannot open location; You may not have permission to open this file.

What do I do now?

Thanks,

User

By default, Ubuntu does not include the required codecs and libraries to watcu DVDs and some other video formats due to legal issues in some countries. You can add DVD playback support following the guides here:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty#Multimedia_Applications
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Working all the way through the Medibuntu link should sort most of your multimedia apps. You might also need to go up to the top tasdkbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console enter

gstreamer-properties

Click on the Video tab and change the top item "Output" from "Auto" to " ... (no Xv)"
Good luck and i hope this helps.

Tom :)

Tried it Tom, but it didn't help.

I installed SMPLAYER, it is difficult to configure, but it works.

Thanks,

I'll also recommend xine or vlc, both are much better than totem.

sudo apt-get install vlc xine-ui

Go to add/Remove software and install the VLC media player.

Your problem should be solved then.

I already have that installed. Then when I try and open a disc it gives me some window to choose DVD, device name, title, chapter, subtitles track, audio track and advanced options. Not sure what to do with all that.

In VLC you can click ¨open¨

There you can put in a location. Use the ¨Open Disk¨ option. Give your DVD player name and your DVD should start in the Menu.

Works for me.

Rob

Hope you can finaly view the DVD now.
