Jaunty wiped out video players

Asked by Patrick M

Just upgraded to Jaunty from intrepid 8.10 Now video will not play. No mpeg, avi, or dvd's. Nothing except web-based streams such as you tube and stumble will play... I think I'm missing codecs, can't seem to get the right ones. Help? Tried every codec I can find, Every video player, totem, mplayer, vlc, xine, even the KDE ones. no good. Everything was fine until I "upgraded" to Jaunty. Answers to questions no help, repent faulty info. Can I just have my 8.10 intrepid back, Please?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Install the w32 (or w64 if you use 64bit)

as well as run:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-restricted-extras

w32 already installed; now reinstalled also re-reinstalled ubuntu-restricted-extras. Audio only on a couple of files. quick flash of both on some other before players crash. nothing but black others.

Pardon my frustrations, but it is still not working

If I open a file with kmplayer i get audio only. If I then re-open with another player (while the kmplayer is open) I get both video and audio, on the second player (any) but only if I first open with kmplayer. Ican close the kmplayer and the second one will keep going. I apparently have all the codecs, I think there is something in the player startup that is amiss.

Still no dvd palyback. I also noticed that although the GUI is Jaunty, if I interrupt boot process only 8.10 Interpid is shown as O/S.

I can get it to go sort of. If I use xine or xfmedia to open one file, I get audio only. If I leave that running and then open a file with vlc it will play at the same time, but with video as well. then I close the fist file and have the video I want to play playing

So i have reinstalled all ther codecs, the software, etc. etc. Gone through the Medibuntu worksheet a few times as well. Still no playback without several convoluted steps. I think this really is a bug with Jaunty, not some user error.

I got open movie to work by changing the gstreamer properties from "auto" to "no Xv". Still no VLC, though. gstreamer told me there were plugins missing, but plays now.

I got some to work, still no Commercial DVd's, No vlc. got the following message fro Terminal

millius@millius:~$ gstreamer-properties
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'glimagesink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'v4lmjpegsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'qcamsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdmon'
The program 'gstreamer-properties' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 61 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Opened Vlc from applications, went to tools:preferences:video and set the output to x11. working now also set gstreamer to "no Xv" from terminal (gstreamer-properties)
