For codecs, please add the Medibuntu repository (if it is legal in your
place of residence) and then run sudo aptitude install
ubuntu-restricted-extras.

The instructions for setting up the repository are at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu - You can probably get by
with the "Any Ubuntu Release and keyring" step alone.

I believe you do not need Medibuntu repositories to play any restricted formats—I do not need it, anyway. You do need the “ubuntu-restricted-extras” package though.

If you do not have a working Internet connexion on your computer running Ubuntu, you can download .deb files on another computer. You can browse the official repositories at: http://packages.ubuntu.com/ The package you are looking for can be found here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/en/jaunty/ubuntu-restricted-extras It is possible that you also need some of the packages that are recommended on this page.
