ibm thinkpad t43 touch point/ultranav not working

I am very new to linux... I have tried different versions of linux and can't seem to get the touchpoint or ultranav working on this thinkpad t43. Any suggestions?

Is there a switch to enable / disable the touchpad? If so, press it / switch it

Touch point and Ultra Nav both enabled in bios. worked in windows. Linux mouse settings no option. Tried booting without the usb mouse attached. No difference. Had to plug USB mouse back in.

sudo ln -s /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_all_mask /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_mask
