Asked by benlawlor

My problem is: The totem d'ont go in Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 with DVD, very common, (DVD-5 ,NTSC-16:9-widescreen-all region-DVD VIDEO), this dvd is sold in all cheap bar, this is a no play inconceivable, this is irracional. Whats happen? Why no work? If this is without remedy the entire Ubuntu (and all Linux) is a fake, is a joke. What is good for the States, is good for States, but, and rest of the world? Damn with States.

Does Videolan (from the package "vlc") work?

I suspect that the applications you have installed are looking for the necessary "codecs" which can do the video/audio decoding. Unfortunately many codecs are only available on Windows but they have been nicely packaged in linux as "w32codecs". This is good and bad news. The w32codecs will not work on a PowerPC architecture computer because they were designed for the Intel compatible x86 CPU.

You may be able to use ffmpeg ( a commad line based utility ) to convert videos to a format that you can play..

ffmpeg -i <yourvideo> playable.ogg

Which would convert "<yourvideo>" to an ogg file which should play in totem/mplayer.

If VLC or Totem doesn't work, and you want to watch dvd movies or downloaded flv video files in Ubuntu,
Google for "flv flash Totem internal data stream vlc undf"
... it's better to install everything in 32 bit, even if you have a 64 bit machine, as there are something missing in 64 bit depository like drivers, codecs,...

Can you help with this problem?
