Playing .mp3 files

Trying to open .mp3 files using Totem. Says I need a plug-in. How do I get the plug-in or should I be using another application. Please speak slowly, I am a newbie.

also you can use xmms to play mp3 music ,its one of the most used and famous in linux ,the interface (gui) is similar to winamp one.
To install it just go to synaptic packages and search it, you will be able to play mp3 music without problems.
