Whenever I play a video in Totem (or VLC) media player, the video goes black whenever I drop down a menu in the player or skip to another point in the video.

Asked by igarvey

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell Latitude X300 laptop with an Intel 855GM graphics card. Whenever I try to view a video in Totem (or even VLC), the video window goes black whenever:

a) the video window is moved
b) i try to access a drop-down menu in the video player
c) i try to skip somewhere in the video

what could be causing this?

Go to System -> Headmenu -> select multimedia systems selector to place it in your preferences. Then goto system -> preferences -> multimedia systems selector and setting your video output to 'XWindow system (no xv)' and then playing your video file in Totem movie player

Can you help with this problem?
