Totem wants plugin - does not say which - region problem

Asked by ray

I have just installed Ubuntu Fiesty and would like to allow my wife to play a band tour video that she bought when we lived in England (we are currently in the states - and she had several dvds she bought there)
I do not seem to be able to play the dvd - I get an error msg saying I do not have the appropriate plugin - but which plugin I need is not identified.

I have done the following
- Installed libdvdcss2
- installed medibuntu
- installed regionset (though I have no idea where this installed to - I do not see it in the program list - but according to the package mgr it is installed)
(The problem with regionset is that we also have dvds from the states that she would like to play. ) - I will save my rant on the idiocy of region restriction for another time......

I have also tried Mplayer, which does not work.

this particular video has the following properties:
Picture Format: PAL 4.3
Region code: 2/3/4/5/6
Disk Format dvd-9

Any help would be appreciated

cheers
Ray

I should add that I can choose Movie->open from the menu and drill down in the cd and select a .vob file to play and it will play the video, but with no sound (sound is working on the PC for other stuff).
It is when I select Movie->Play Disk that the plugin error occurs.

Try installing libdvdread3 and w32codecs (regular Ubuntu) or w64codecs (64-bit version). This will give you support for most video-codecs.

You say you can hear sound normally, is that in MP3-format or OGG-vorbis?

In case you don't know the site:

Thank you for the reply,

I had the libs you mentioned and had followed the instructions in the RestrictedFormats URL you gave. However I had missed the libxine1* suite of libs. Once they were installed Totem automatically prompted me to allow it to load the required plugin.

It now works fine and the missus has a big smile on her face.

Many thanks

PS - I pressed problem solved before I realised there was a 'This solved my problem' button attached to your post. Hope that doesn't mess up and solution search or inhibits the solution being attributed to you.

Hey Ray

I haven't gotten credit for it, but otherwise it should be fine. If you want, you could look for a 'cancel solution', I guess.
Then again, I really have no idea what to do with the karma points. :)

Glad to be of help.
