Need help finding DVD source plugin. I am new user

Asked by Denis O'Connor

I am very new to ubuntu. I do not even know what a Plug in is!!. I have ubuntu 7.04 Feisty fawn

My drive identifies the dvd with title and asks me to download necessary codecs. when i click ok it goes to download then comes up with meesage " requires DVd source plugin which is not installed.
my system seems to have totem running for dvd's. Is totem a plugin?? Help on system also suggests gxine for some dvd's. Is gxine a plugin?

I need some idiot proof instructions at this stage of my learning cycle I am afraid. I have looked on link provided as answer to same question but it does not help me yet. I know too little about this system

I hope someone can tell me what plugin and where to get it and details of how to install it please.

Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

Denis O'Connor

Hi Denis,

I'm not sure I've understood your problem correctly

1. or ubuntu is asking you for your original ubuntu DVD when you try to install something : then follow these guidelines

if you have a good internet connection, it is easier to not use the original ubuntu DVD to fetch codecs etc
to disable the ubuntu DVD as a source to fetch stuff go to System->Administration->Software Sources
there, uncheck the check-box linked to the ubuntu DVD and click on close

2. or you do not have all needed plugins/codecs to play encrypted DVDs (most DVDs are encrypted)

then follow these guidelines : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=413624

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Type the following command in a terminal (applications → accessories → terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc

To get better dvd playback first you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
here howto add https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu here the medibuntu available software list http://packages.medibuntu.org/

Then to install:

sudo update
sudo aptitude install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
