Midi files not playing on Totem

Asked by The Doctor Forever

I am using Totem Movie Player to play mp3 music and video files and will most likely be using Limewire soon. But when I try to open files with the extension ".mid" it opens in Totem but doesn't show sounds. I have read the reccomended questions but they're all about other applications.

Open a Terminal and command this:

sudo apt-get install timidity timidity-interfaces-extra kmidi

You need a password, then download a Soff-synth to simulate a music machine.

Linux use Software to synthesizer midi files (.mid) your Mac use a software to do it, you need download a soft-synth, your sound card not have a synth of 128 polyphonic voices . If you don't have internet sorry.

If you are using Ubuntu, install the following by typing in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install timidity timidity-interfaces-extra timidity-el

If you are using Kubuntu add kmid to the end of the line above.

I play my mid and midi files via Exaile, available for installation via Applications, Add/Remove.

I am sorry to read that you do not have an internet connection.

Without an internet connection you cannot update your Ubuntu operating system nor can you download any programmes that you might like.

...and how will you get limewire?...you will need an internet connection for that.

Regrettably, until you get an internet connection, no-one can help you.

You could try an internet cafe and hire a temporary connection.

At least on Ubuntu 10.10 and Totem 2.32, is seems Totem does not requires Timidity any-more to be able to play MIDI files. I've just checked it.

Can you help with this problem?
