Sound Track Not Synchronized

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and have installed MPlayer using the Synaptic Package Manager. When DVD are played the sound track is not synchronized with the video. The audio is first followed by the video. How can I solve this problem?

This has happened to me before; it usually means that your computer/graphics card is too slow. Try using the proprietary drivers of your graphics card (Nvidia, ATI). That's all I can say, so I'll add this as an Information Request so that other people more knowledgeable can answer too.

Thanks for your response. I will try your suggestion once I find out how to Identify my graphics card and how to load its proprietary drivers. As you can see I am very new to ubuntu.
