marcobra, like i said in my prior post, it happens to EVERY DVD i play. to each and every one of them and each of them stops playing at an hour and twenty minutes. therefore, it's not the dvd player.

First please be sure your Ubuntu 8.04.1 is fully updated and upgraded, please do this check from terminal.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all

then to reboot your pc, type:

sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

then retry or use vlc to play that DVD.

to install vlc, open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You will find vlc under menu Applications->accessories->Sound & Video

Hope this helps

That sounds like a power management issue.

Check the settings in System, Preferences, Power Management.
Also check that all your screensavers are deactivated while watching DVDs.

As marcobra advised, install VLC. You can also try GNOME MPlayer.

This is weird, but for some reason, Totem plays certain dvds with no problem. However, it stops playing on some dvds at exactly one hour and twenty minutes. I'm baffled!

Have you tried to play your DVDs on VLC or Gnome MPlayer?

whatup andre? in reply to your question, i did download vlc and mplayer but i don't like those players at all, so i uninstalled them. now, you're not going to believe this. but, totem works! it's crazy. for some unknown reason, totem does not play 2 of my dvds, which stop playing at exactly one hour and twenty minutes. totem does play the rest of my dvds without a hitch. go figure. this has been one huge roller coaster ride. by the way, in case i run into more problems with totem, can you recommend me players other than mplayer and vlc? I'd appreciate it ! thanks!

Downloading one of those other players must have also installed a missing codec. Glad to read that everything is working now.

I have a number of players installed: GNOME MPlayer, MPlayer, Totem, VLC. Each of them has something to offer.

Now you can mark this thread as "Solved".
