Go to your Synaptics Package Manager and, in the search box, type in "gstreamer" and, when all the components are displayed, select each and every one of them. Mark them all for installation, as well as all the sub-programs which come up, download and install them. (There are a LOT of them so this whole process will take some time.)

After that's all done, go here: < http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/ > and select for downloading both the next-to-last and the last application (x-bzip and x-gzip). (The reason I'm telling you to download both is that I do not remember which one works.) Try them both to see which one is appropriate. One of them will install "libdvdcss2" on your machine and this is absolutely necessary, along with all the gstreamer components, in order to play commercial DVDs.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Hi,
I ran into the same problem as Taurus that totem gives an error when wanting to play a dvd. I tried to follow Lawrences advice, but i run into a little problem.

Quote: 'After that's all done, go here: < http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/ > and select for downloading both the next-to-last and the last application (x-bzip and x-gzip). (The reason I'm telling you to download both is that I do not remember which one works.)'

When I do what is described above, I do not know how to download/extract the x-bzip and x-gzip? Can anyone give me an advice on this one? It is probably a very basic Ubuntu skill, but I am new to this. Thanks
