Ubuntu 8.04- Audio No video - VLC/Movie player

 Hello,
 I have looked through all the Q's here and have not found one that helps,

 Im on Ubuntu 8.04
 Playing any Video CLip (AVI, WMA, MOV, ECT) i can hear the Audio but get no Video.
 I installed the two Packets from synaptic Package Center, And also VLC Player and Still no Video.

 Im new to Linux, but have Leaned my way around..For the most part,

   Other Details... If it might help
 It is Online (Havent got Wi-FI to work yet tho)
 Acer Aspire 5610z Laptop
 Dual 2.3ghz Intel
 1gb mem
 Build in Audio/Video

You need to make sure you have the correct multimedia codecs installed.

Although some documents are created for 7.10 the steps provided will be similar when using Hardy.
