Cannot play .3GP files

While playing 3gp files, the following error message is displayed"The playback of this movie requires a Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) decoder plugin which is not installed.".....

There is an AMR decoder in medibuntu, but totem fails to use it. Mplayer and others play these files fine with this codec installed. This is fairly typical behaviour for totem.

The 50 step ffmpeg recompilation in the third link is not helpful for 99.9% of users.
