Can't turn the volume up

Hi, I've just installed ubuntu and am very impressed with how it looks. I'm playing some music and I can only turn the volume up slightly. Can someone let me know if I need to install a new driver or something. I'm running a dell demension 5150.

There are several volume controls that all contribute to overall volume.
Totem itself has a volume slider but there’s also the global volume control in the upper panel.
Double click the little speaker icon and drag the Master and PCM sliders up.

This worked perfectly. I've got one more question - I've moved over from windows xp media centre 2005. Do you know how to get the ir receiver and mce remote control working in Ubuntu?
