Where do I find it?
How do I load it?
I'm sure this has been answered somewhere already, so can you point me in the right direction. please.

Have no codec to read Totem videos

I loaded the codecs found at the above site mentioned by Alan Pope. They loaded into /usr/lib/codecs. But when I try to play a .wmv file in Totem I get the following message:
"Could not play 'file:/// . . . . .wmv'. You do no have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins.".
I checked the plugins in /usr/lib/totem. There were plugins relating to basic, complex, gmp, mully and narrowspace, and also one entiled totem-mozilla-
Not sure what went wrong.

The Windows Codecs do not support files encoded with DRM(Digital Restrictions Management), could that be an issue?

Thanks, williamsts99, for your suggestion.
Not sure why but Gxine can be modified with the restricted format
codecs. It will then play the .wmv files that Totem cannot.
I am presuming that the codecs used are similar in both cases.
Therefore I am presuming that the .wmv files concerned are not encoded
with DRM.
Lots of guesses and presumptions! Not sure where to go from here.

adrian
Please close this ticket if the issue has been solved... Thanks.

Thanks for email.
I have tried downloading the relevant codecs from the site suggested
(restricted formats). But Totem still cant play .wmv files.
Downloading the extra formats for Gxine means I can play .wmv files
using Gxine on my Puppy distro.
So I have tried downloading Gxine to my Ubuntu distro but so far have
not completed the exercise.
Because Totem uses the same backend (xine) as Gxine, I presumed they
should react similarly when the codecs were applied.
Not sure where I've gone wrong. Which logs would help with more detail?
Regards
Adrian

Hello Idirissi
This file plays using Gxine after I added the extra codecs.
http://
This file also plays using GXine:
http://
But when I try to play them in Totem I get the mesage:
"You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need
to install the necessary plugins."
I don't have mpalyer or vlc as yet but will try them there as soon as I
can download them.

Adrian

Hello Idrissi
After downloading further codecs (w32codecs) and additional Windows
codecs I now get the following message when I attempt to open .wmv file
using Totem:
"Could not get/set settings from/on resource."
Not sure what this implies.

Adrian

Hi folks, I'm a new B Ubuntu user and I need to edit my wmv files. Saw this thread and thought it might be helpful, but after reading it, I am not sure where I should start.
As I already have
Avidemux
GOPchop
Kino
Pitivi Video Editor (which won't run at all)
and I don't think any of these handle wmv, perhaps I should be looking for wmv -> avi (?) conversion packages?
Thx!
JF

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04. Have always had no problems with video files (WMV etc) in previous versions, but now I cannot get video to work. The file opens and immediately goes. I have tried just about every thing suggested on forums to mno avail.
