Firestarter activation and anti-virus !

Asked by C.A.Hammond Smith

I need to be sure that my firewall is active and click 'run' when I go online, is this working ?
Do I need an anti-virus ? and if so how do I go about installing it ?

Short answer on the subject of anti-virus on Linux is (in my opinion) no, you do not need one. Viruses are so rare on Linux as to make it highly unlikely that you would get struck by one.

Generally it's arguable that out of the box Ubuntu doesn't need a firewall because no services are started by default, so there is nothing "listening" which could be attacked. Personally I have a hardware firewall on another machine, and no firewall running on my desktop.
