Please forgive me as this is not an answer to your question; however I have my own question regarding Totem; I am a brand new user of Ubuntu and already have totem installed however I need the decoder/plugin. How do I get that please and does totem play music as well as movie??

@CARLOS SOLER: I'm not sure what xine is, but I believe you need to install a proper codec for that specific video file.
@Linda slasberg: You might wanna search the plugin at System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

Follow step no. 4 and no. 5 .
Now you should be able to hear sound in ur movies :)

My problem is similar. I can play and listen to sound files like mp3, and I can watch any video (except on VLC, with doesn't work good), but I can't hear any sound on the videos. I'm really puzzled on how to solve this. None of the answers here could help. Any idea?

If you instal the program Automatix, it will detect all the audio and video
codecs you need, ant the problem will be solved,
Good luck,
Carlos

I've got Automatix installed in Ubuntu 7.04. I installed from here the AUD-DVD codecs, Mplayer and FFplugin and Multimedia codecs. Then I installed totem Xine also from Automatix. But anyway, I still can listen to mp3 but not to my Videos, neither Youtube, break.com, etc...
I'm a newbie user, so I just used Automatix.... maybe there's any conflict? or should I have done any previous step? :S
My videocard is an ATI 9600 and the soundcard is a Soundblaster audigy, if it helps

Found it!!! at last I could find a way to solve it.
I was related with Firefox flash video sound, everithing's explained here:
In my case it wasn't needed to install codecs, just modifying that text archive as it is explained. It worked inmediately ^^
